Finding Resilience and Purpose After a Rare Disease Diagnosis
My life changed dramatically in my early twenties when I experienced the onset of a rare disease called narcolepsy. Everything shifted, seemingly overnight. Simple tasks that I once took for granted became monumental challenges.
The vibrant life I had built—working multiple jobs while excelling in college—crumbled under the weight of my new reality. Suddenly, the energy and ease that had defined my days were replaced by frustration and fatigue.
Finding resilience through my diagnosis
Yet, through the upheaval, I discovered resilience. Medications played a crucial role in stabilizing my condition, offering a lifeline when I felt adrift. Slowly but surely, I began to rebuild. Success became a fluid concept—no longer defined by how much I could achieve, but by how meaningfully I could live within my new limitations.
The importance of support systems
Relationships proved to be another anchor. The connections I nurtured became sources of joy and strength, teaching me the profound value of support systems. Finding love and fostering deep friendships reminded me that I was not alone in my journey. These relationships became a testament to my ability to adapt and grow, even in the face of adversity.
Navigating my new reality
As I reflect on my current state, I ask myself questions that guide my path. Am I happy? The answer isn’t always straightforward, but I’ve learned to find happiness in small victories and moments of peace.
Financial and housing stability have been a challenge to manage—a reality many people with disabilities face. But each hurdle I overcome strengthens my resolve.
Healing through creative outlets
Creativity has become both a refuge and a revelation. Am I making art? Yes, and it has been transformative. Through painting, writing, and other creative outlets, I’ve found ways to express my experiences and emotions, giving voice to my internal world. Art has helped me reclaim a sense of purpose and identity beyond my rare disease diagnosis.
Prioritizing my self-care
Self-care is another cornerstone of my journey. Am I taking care of my body? Am I focusing on nutrition, exercise, and other physical practices that support my health? Am I taking care of my mind? The following ways help me nurture my mental well-being:
- Journaling
- Therapy
- Hiking
- Engaging in creative pursuits
These practices remind me that healing is a holistic process, requiring attention to both body and spirit.
Fueling my passion and purpose
Perhaps most importantly, I ask: Am I passionate about something? Passion fuels my resilience. It drives me to advocate for others in the rare disease community, to create, and to dream. Passion transforms struggle into meaning and gives me a reason to keep moving forward.
Living with a rare disease is not easy. It’s a journey filled with uncertainties, setbacks, and triumphs. But through it all, I’ve learned to focus on what truly matters—connection, creativity, self-care, and passion.
These are the pillars of a life well-lived, no matter the circumstances. My rare disease may have reshaped my life path, but it has also revealed a depth of strength and purpose I never knew I possessed.
