My Child May Have a Rare Disease, but I Still Dream Big Dreams for Her

15 years ago, I became the mother of a daughter who lives with a rare disease.

My daughter has a rare disease, but that doesn't stop me from dreaming big for her. Living with a chronic illness has undoubtedly presented its challenges, but I believe that she can still achieve extraordinary things.

Here are 5 big dreams I have for my daughter, dreams that I fervently think she can fulfill despite the everyday hurdles she faces.

1. Becoming a voice for others

Despite her illness, I dream that my daughter will become a voice for others who are facing similar challenges. Whether it's through advocacy, writing, or public speaking, I envision her using her experiences to inspire and support others in similar circumstances. Her unique perspective could be a beacon of hope for those who feel alone in their struggles.

2. Making a mark in the arts

My daughter has shown a remarkable talent for drawing and painting from a young age. As she navigates life with her illness, I dream that she will continue cultivating and showcasing her artistic abilities.

Whether it's co-authoring a book with me or exhibiting her artwork, I believe that she can make a profound impact in the world of arts, captivating audiences with her creativity and resilience.

3. Pursuing higher education

Despite the challenges she faces, I dream that my daughter will have the opportunity to pursue higher education. Whether it's earning a degree in a field she's passionate about or conducting academic research.

I envision her thriving in an environment that nurtures her intellectual curiosity and determination. I try to nurture her skills and encourage her to consider college.

4. Embracing adventure and travel

Living with a chronic illness can sometimes feel limiting, but I refuse to let that define my daughter's experiences. I let her plan trips and try to help her go on those adventures with her family. By embracing adventure and travel and exploring new cultures and landscapes, she can learn how to travel on her own one day.

Despite the logistical hurdles, I will support her in seeking unforgettable experiences that broaden her horizons and shape her worldview.

5. Finding love and building a family

Despite the uncertainties that come with her condition, I dream that my daughter will have the opportunity to find love and build a family of her own if that's what she desires.

I believe in the power of human connection and the joy of nurturing meaningful relationships. With the right support system, I am confident that she can experience true love and fulfillment that family life can bring. My husband and I try to set a positive and hopeful example for her.

My daughter is more than her rare disease

While my daughter's rare disease has undoubtedly shifted the trajectory of our lives, it has not dampened our dreams for her future. My hopes for her extend far and wide; she can truly become what she wants to become. In the meantime, I will continue championing her journey, helping her navigate the obstacles, and celebrating the triumphs along the way.

In the end, my daughter is more than her illness. She is a force to be reckoned with, brimming with potential and unyielding spirit. I will continue to dream big for her, and I have unwavering faith that she can achieve greatness, no matter the challenges.
