What is the most annoying unsolicited advice you've heard?

What annoying or unhelpful suggestions are you most tired of receiving (unsolicited!) from other people?

  1. You should take more supplements. OTC supplements aren't going to fix my problem.

    1. Oh, yes..some people seem to be convinced that certain OTC supplements will keep everyone healthy ... sigh. It's due to an unregulated industry that can make any claims it wants to in large print, at least here in the US. Scary.
      Thanks for your share.

  2. I have told I needed to be around sick people to help build up my immune system. It doesn’t work that way with autoimmune diseases.

    1. Oh my God...that shows a serious lack of understanding of basic autoimmune disease processes...
Sigh. I suppose it could open up 'a teaching moment' to try to help educate others about infectious diseases and immune system problems versus autoimmune diseases, but that would take the right scenario and a willing and empathic 'student.'

  3. People have said, You look good..just eat healthy. They have no idea the complexity of the overlapping autoimmune disease, comorbidity.

    1. Thanks for sharing here...So irritating to hear these uninformed bits of intended advice, huh? I now tell myself that many who haven't yet had to deal with serious or chronic illnesses may actually believe in the advice they give... because it's self-soothing to believe that simply 'eating healthy' will fix most any illness...
Sigh. I suppose our challenge then is to simply thank them for their wish for our good health, and maybe even give ourselves an internal hug...

The 'you look good' one is among my most triggering comments from friends and family... it definitely used to irk me more... reminding myself that there's good intent and possibly even fear in the person making these comments has been helping me.

  4. My brother and mom tell me to not dwell on my health and to stop my prednisone. Stopping prednisone would kill me considering I have Addison's Disease. But also a good way to stop the dwelling they seem to think I do. I don't dwell at all. It is what it is but it does rob you of living a joyful existence!

    1. Hi, again,
So sorry that you are suffering, especially with lack of support from some family members. I found another possible resource for you for a Addison's Disease support group. Perhaps even a live group? Also, it appears that Facebook might also have an Addison's Disease support group.
